Roan Mountain – The Southern Highlands – Photography Workshop

June 20, 2020

Early Sunrise  – Mid-afternoon

Join Smoky Mountain School of Photography instructors Jerry Whaley and Roger Trentham for a day of learning while exploring the wildflowers and scenic landscape possibilities on one of the most beautiful, majestic areas to be found in the Southern Highlands.

We will visit the Roan High Gardens for sunrise, then explore Roan Mountain and the Carver’s Gap area of the Appalachian Trail. Here, along the trail, you will find open grassy meadows with stands of Rhododendron, evergreen trees and wildflowers. It is a beautiful mix of plants, grasses and flowers, with mountains fading off into the distance. Most days this time of year clouds will develop and provide an interesting sky too. The weather in the Roan Mountain area can vary greatly – be prepared for cold and rain. But it could be sunny, or partly cloudy all day – be prepared.

Mid-day we will take a short hike up to Round Bald for a 360 degree view of the Appalachian Mountains. Those who care to, can stay for sunset too – possibly at Jane Bald. Bring flashlights.

During this day we will explore effective field techniques under different lighting conditions, including the use of flash in the field. Hyper-Focal focusing will be demonstrated, along with techniques for Focus-Stacking to give maximum depth-of-field landscape images. There will be lots of flower and macro opportunities in the area as well.

Topics covered during the day:

* Composition

* Supplemental light (flash & LED) in the field

* Camera setup for sharp images and good exposure

* Using blinkies & histogram for maximum information capture

* Hyper-Focal Focusing for best depth-of-field (DOF) with your lens

* Focus Stacking for fantastic DOF (blending multiple images)

* Using Auto-ISO for working in the wind or with wildlife
